"Voluntarism is the highest form of community service, and it is a peculiarly American phenomenon."

Rebuilding Together began in 1973 as Christmas in April when volunteers in Midland, Texas decided to devote one day in April to repairing and sprucing up the homes of low-income, disabled and elderly neighbors in their community. A happy recipient of these volunteer services declared "Why, this is like Christmas in April." The idea spread from town to town across the nation and eventually grew to programs of year-round emergency repair services as well as the signature National Rebuilding Day event held the last Saturday of April.

The Veterans Housing Initiative in Southern Nevada is a replication of National Rebuilding Day designed to address the needs of those who have served in our National Armed Forces. This event occurred for the first time in the Fall of 2008 and is scheduled for early November 2009.

Volunteers are the backbone of our National Rebuilding Day and Veterans Housing Iniative programs which both allow us to expand our services to the community.

Benefits of volunteering for National Rebuilding Day and Veterans Housing Initiative:
  • One Day - limited commitment for most volunteers.
  • Hands One Experience - you can see the immediate, positive impact.
  • Making a Difference - you see the before and after.
  • Donations Have Impact - the value of the dollars is quadrupled with donations of labor, discounted prices and contributed materials.
  • Builds Camaraderie - groups interact in a different setting and interact with homeowners.
  • Enhances Group Identity - "We did it!"
  • Exposure - focus the community on neighbor helping neighbor.
  • Community Pride and Revitalization - work renews pride in homeowners and encourages neighbors to improve their own homes.
  • Understanding - volunteers gain a better understanding of housing and human needs.
  • IT FEELS GOOD!
